Onana’s United journey has unravelled alarmingly quickly. The Cameroonian shot-stopper was left out of Amorim’s first three Premier League line-ups, only managing a start in the humiliating EFL Cup second-round defeat to League Two minnows Grimsby Town. While the club initially suggested his absence was due to lingering fitness issues, the real hammer blow came on deadline day when United splashed £18m ($24m) on 23-year-old Lammens from Royal Antwerp. That purchase, combined with Altay Bayindir already deputising in goal, left Onana’s future in tatters.

The keeper, who still has three years left on his deal, was one of several players hit with a 25 per cent wage reduction following United’s Champions League failure in the 2023-24 campaign.
